The Freddie Dunn Quintet presents ”Birks’ Works: The Music of Dizzy Gillespie”
This FDQ performance will feature a selection of tunes associated with the late great John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie. Some will be reimagined in ways that challenge the listener’s ear. Join us on a journey from Bebop to modal hip-hop pointillism and beyond.

Project Synopsis

For this series I will present an introduction to Diz via personal anecdotes, readings, and musical performances of tunes that he composed or that were closely associated with him.  The takeaway will be an introduction to his life and music that generates continuing interest in his body of work.  Songs performed will include Salt Peanuts, The Land of Ooh Black Di, Groovin High, and A Night in Tunisia.
